About Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do, a Korean martial art with roots dating back more than 2,000 years, was introduced to the United States in the late 1950s. Still sometimes erroneously referred to as "Korean karate", it has since developed until today as the most popular and most practiced of all other martial arts combined.

Although the roots of Tae Kwon Do were originally developed as a fighting and defense method for warriors over the centuries, growing as it is today because it offers a multitude of benefits enjoyed by all people regardless of age, sex or culture. It is currently practiced in more than 140 countries around the world.

The literal translation of Tae Kwon Do is "the way of the foot and hand" or "foot, hand art". However, as you will see, this is a rather superficial translation. The development of an overall Tae Kwon Do spirit will carry over into all aspects of a student's life.

Through Tae Kwon Do, one may attain proficiency in self-defense in a relatively short period of time. From a physical standpoint it has been designed for maximum efficiency of motion and therefore highly effective for self-defense. The basic techniques can be learned fairly quickly, but will take years to perfect. This "easy-to-learn, hard-to-master" element is the challenge and the delight of Tae Kwon Do training.

It is true that sport Tae Kwon Do has become quite popular in our society, so much so that it is now an official Olympic medal event. However, as you will see, sport Tae Kwon Do itself is a mere shadow of the Art of Tae Kwon Do.

Although tremendous physical benefits are a part of the goal of Tae Kwon Do, the true focus of the Art is on the harnessing of human potential, the power each of us possess, but rarely tap. If Tae Kwon Do is to be called an art of self-defense, then its goal is best described in this manner: the best self-defense is that of a serene, self-confidant person, at peace with herself and the world around her.

This type of personal development emphasizes mental discipline, emotional selfrestraint and a philosophy of kindness, humility and strong moral character. Tae Kwon Do's mission is to spread its logic, goodness and philosophy for the cause of world peace, through the betterment of the individual. By practicing Tae Kwon Do and its related ethics, a student will become a better person. It is through the balance of mental, emotional and physical elements that true growth as a martial artist occurs. In this way, Tae Kwon Do is more than simply a method of self-defense. It is also a way of approaching life and learning to live harmoniously. Practitioners must be open to experiences that build character, require self-discipline and promote balance and moderation in all things. He who has mastered the curriculum of Tae Kwon Do is a powerful, but generous individual.

Even with the explanation above, it is hard to get a true sense of the essence of this Art. For that, we encourage any and all individuals to explore the world of Tae Kwon Do. The true essence of this Art cannot be seen, touched, smelled, tasted or heard. It can only be experienced.
